The Gas Institute DCP — Dynamic Cone Penetrometer
This DCP was developed by the Institute of Gas Technology over a period of two years of extensive research and field testing. Experiments were designed to test the reliability of the DCP against all current methods of compaction verification. Field procedures using the DCP method have consistently provided the users with reliable information on an indication of the density of their backfills. Many companies have standardized with the DCP Method because of its reliability, simplicity and cost effectiveness.
The DCP is a rugged and dependable tool designed for harsh field applications. It is so inexpensive that every crew can afford to have one.
The DCP Kit includes a hard-shell, foam-cushioned, nylon carrying case and a Moisture Meter. The DCP tool is coated with a corrosion-resistant galvanized finish.

Sowers DCP
The Sowers DCP uses a 15 lb. steel mass falling 20 inches to strike an anvil to penetrate a 1.5 in. diameter 45 degree cone that has been seated in the bottom of a hand augered hole. The device has been used extensively in the southeastern region of the USA and calibrated with standard SPT results. The original correlations by Sowers are shown on the link below. Of course, similar correlations could be developed for soils of other regions and of differing geologic derivation.

Wildcat DCP
A 35 pound hammer with a 15 inch drop drives 1 to 5 one meter long 1” rods, one 0.1 meter long end rod and the 1.4” diameter cone.
The 3 gallon tank with hand operated pump injects polymer slurry through the sounding rods to fill the 0.2” annulus between rods and soil, preventing energy robbing, soil to rod friction.
Cones are 1.4” diameter “lost points.” At each test completion, the rods are extracted by a leveraged post-popper, with the “lost point” remaining in the bottom of the test hole, allowing easier and faster rod extraction.
Our Excel compatible software uses your noted penetrometer blow counts to log the test.
