Description

Reflectors for MIT SCAN-T2 & SCAN-T3 Pavement Thickness Measurements

MIT-SCAN-T2/SCAN-T3 Reflectors are used for pavement thickness measurements. Reflector discs come in 3 sizes and 2 different materials. Each device is calibrated to the specific size, thickness and metallurgy of the reflectors.

Materials are:

  • Aluminum- For Asphalt
    • 7cm – minimum structural depth required is 15mm. Maximum measuring depth is 120mm.
    • 12cm – minimum structural depth required is 40mm. Maximum measuring depth is 180mm.
    • 30cm – minimum structural depth required is 120mm. Maximum measuring depth is 350mm.
  • Galvanized Steel- For Concrete
    • 12cm – minimum structural depth required is 40mm. Maximum measuring depth is 180mm.
    • 30cm – minimum structural depth required is 120mm. Maximum measuring depth is 350mm.
  • Proper Size depends on the thickness of the pavement your trying to measure.

Asphalt Pavement Applications:

  1. The largest disc is used for measuring the thickness of the base coarse.
  2. The mid size measures the intermediate coarse.
  3. The smallest size measures the wear or surface coarse. Including typical Mill & Overlay thicknesses.

Concrete Pavement Applications:

  1. The largest disc is used for new concrete pavement typically 12 to 13 inches in thickness
  2. The 12cm diameter disc is used for overlay projects typically 5 to 7 inches thick.
  3. A 14″ X 14″ reflector is available for Airport Runway or Taxiway thickness measurements up to 20 inches in depth.

Installation Notes:

  1. Prior to paving, place the reflector on the existing layer.
    1. Galvanized Steel reflectors include a center hole punched in them for a nail to hold it flat and in place while the paver progresses over it.
    2. Place the aluminum pavers in the tack or seal coats in front of the paver.
  2. In addition, be sure to place reflectors away from other metal objects such as tie bars and dowel bars. Both the SCAN-T2 or SCAN-T3 requires plain concrete or asphalt in front and behind the reflector during the measurement.
